Sport England’s prestigious Clubmark award continues to recognise more and more clubs across the nation for outstanding practice.

Clubmark shows that a club provides an environment that prioritises the welfare of members, and encourages everyone to enjoy sport and sustain an active lifestyle.

A Clubmark club is recognised as a safe, rewarding and fulfilling place for participants of all ages.

Kang Han Combat & Martial Arts Academy became only the fourth British Taekwondo club to achieve this fantastic recognition. Along with Quest, Koryo and Ultimate Taekwondo.

Starting out in 1999, the name of the club was derived from the children who trained there, as they were asked to pick a Korean word that they each thought would fit the bill. Kang Han means ‘strong as in powerful’ in Korean.

Kang Han Chief Instructor Grandmaster Ian Lennox, 8th Dan, and member of British Taekwondo’s Martial Arts Technical Team, became British Taekwondo’s first British-born person to achieve the title of Grandmaster in November 2014 .

“We aim to ensure that every member of the club has the full opportunity to experience the various sports on offer at the Academy”, he said.

“We ensure that people are able to develop at their own pace, to their own level, and in a safe environment. Through the principles of martial arts and the sports we offer, we have been able to help increase the self esteem and confidence of local people, and help keep them health..!

“We believe continuity and succession planning is vital to our future success as a club for the community.

“Our work with local schools (via after-school clubs), and the church has been a key part in developing strong community ties, and maximising opportunities and benefits in participation.”

Following several years of training at various locations, in 2009 the club took out a long term lease at its present venue at Beardall Street, Hucknall. Here it has expanded to deliver a wider offering of sports and self-defence to the community.

The Academy now features Taekwondo, Boxing, Kick Boxing, Jujitsu and is also used as a dance and fitness centre.

Over 300 people, on average, use the Academy’s facilities per week, where training for all abilities and ages (currently ranging from 4-60 years old)  is provided, as well as support for both able-bodied and disabled members with physical and mental impairments.

Having demonstrated the continued development and growth of their club, upheld consistent quality standards, and achieved various grants from Sports Legacy Fund, the club was delighted to receive the prestigious Clubmark Award.

Kang Han Martial Arts Academy aim to provide a combined multi-sport and educational facility that will deliver a broad range of choices and opportunities in sport for the local community of Hucknall, and look to work more closely with the Police and Probabtion Service with the aim to help reduce anti-social behaviour.
